Cornerstone community home

Location

The Cornerstone Community facility is a multi-story house located in the ethnically diverse community of 16th Street Heights in the District of Columbia. It reflects the philosophy of providing a home for Cornerstone’s residents rather than a more impersonal institutional environment. The facility has single rooms for residents and live-in staff and common areas including a living room, dining room, and kitchen.

One-on-one Counseling

Cornerstone provides one-on-one addictions counseling and individualized case management to prepare and empower residents to remain in recovery and move to permanent, recovery-friendly housing. Each resident works with the case manager to prepare an “Action Plan.” In this plan they develop goals for housing, recovery, mental and physical health, vocational and educational plans, finances and budgets, family reconciliation and relationship building, spirituality and legal issues. The case manager and resident meet regularly to assess on the resident’s progress.

Relationships are the Specific Therapy

We like to say that “relationships are the specific therapy” at Cornerstone. We have staff members (community builders) who actually live in the house with the residents. Staff and residents share the preparation of meals, the cleanup afterward and chores to keep the house clean and inviting. We also share fun times together – like overnight trips to the bay, basketball games, plays, the circus and barbeques in Rock Creek Park.   There are no easy solutions to substance abuse.  Recovery takes time, a healthy lifestyle and stable housing – the very things most people living  on the margins have not been able to have and the very things Cornerstone provides.

We hope that as each is able, the residents of Cornerstone will:

  • Discover a sense of joy and celebration in recovery and live a clean and sober life with all its benefits;
  • Maintain their physical/mental/spiritual health … understand their health issues and do what is necessary to stay healthy;
  • Find meaningful work – chores around the house, regular volunteer work or a job that gives a sense of pride and fulfillment – all carefully matched to a one’s strengths and to whatever limitations they may have;
  • Strengthen support systems (friends, family, faith community) … find reconciliation in the significant relationships in their lives;
  • Develop necessary daily living skills.
